E-Learning Week Issue: "Singaporeans are easily influenced by advertisements." Do you agree?

3 posts/comments by James:

Well, advertisements are very broad. Therefore, I personally disagrees that Singapore are easily influenced by advertisements. Everyone on earth will be influence by advertisements. Technologies are improving so fast lately, and teenagers will definitely looking out for their favorite PSP, Xbox or Play Station sets and games. All this need advertisements and it strikes many teenagers and even adults all over the world. Look at Japan, every kid out there will be enjoying there PSP games. Advertisements just play a big role in influencing everyone.

Adding more to what Celeste pointed out on advertisement on drugs etc. I would like to say that advertisements are everywhere, sharing with public that smoking is harmless, please avoid, all this articles and pictures are seen everywhere and not only in Singapore but in America too. It is a very large scale advertisement to ask smokers or 'druggers' (drug addicts) to stop or at least reduce the usage of drugs. But personally, I feel that there are still a lot of teenagers picking up smoking. It is not that the advertisement allows them to do it, but it is because of bad company. And again, I disagree Singaporeans are easily influence by advertisements.

There are many types of advertisements. Advertisements like sports, drugs, business and finance, information technology, science or law. Public gets fascinated by the attractiveness of the product on the advertisement and hence probably made a rise in high-level consumption. Everyone gets fascinated by attractive images or animations advertisement. For I disagree that only Singaporeans are easily influence by advertisements.

Agree. When a commercial comes out on TV and show that some certain stores are going on sale and usually the next day you'll see a lot of people at the shop. This also partly because of the "KIASU" effect of the local people has.

Agree. Singaporeans love to follow trend and especially when they see posters or advertisements on newspapers or on the streets, they tend to think that its "cool" and "hip" just like the recent IPOD marketing where you can see on commercials being air at prime time and posters everywhere on the streets. And the result of that is: You can see plenty of people listening on white earphones on the streets.

Agree. Local TV commercials are becoming more attractive and innovative. Even a 3 year old kid knows how to hum along the tune when the commercial is being played.

Advertisements showing the consequences of smoking, drug taking, were advertised constantly and there is a significant drop in the number of smokers in Singapore.

However, there were also advertisements to promote courtesy but Singaporeans seem to ignore them.

Advertisements can influence Singaporean only in certain ways, depending on how each individual thinks. This would most probably be how beneficial the idea brought across is to each individual.

True. They believe what they see and "wow" by the effects and the person who brand it.

We can see that advertisements on print or on television like promotions, people will flock to have it.

When they saw the advertisement, sometime they may just follow what is the trend now.

They buy the products in the advertisements if the ads are attractive.
